The 76th Legislature passed HB 692, which states in part: "The social security number of an applicant for or holder of a license, certificate of registration, or other legal authorization issued by a licensing agency to practice in a specific occupation or profession that is provided to the licensing agency is confidential and is not subject to disclosure under the open records law."

The law was passed in the House on March 18 and in the Senate on May 17 and went into effect after being signed by Governor George W. Bush on May 29, 1999.

The requirements are the same for International Medical School Graduates (IMGs) and U.S. or Canadian medical school graduates except that:

•          IMGs must demonstrate that they are either ABMS or BOS specialty board certified, have graduated from a medical school on our Substantial Equivalence list, or must submit Forms Z1-Z7  so that we can evaluate their medical education.
•          IMGs who performed their clinical clerkships in the United States will have to demonstrate that each clerkship was performed in a setting that has an accredited residency training program in the same specialty or sub-specialty.
•          Finally, IMGs are required to have either two years of continuous progressive accredited training, TMB Board approved training, teaching under a Faculty Temporary License in Texas, or a combination. 

The “Licensure Status” will show any non-disciplinary limitation on a physician’s license, such as “LUA - Limited to Underserved Area only”. If this area shows “None”, then the physician has no such limitation.

The registration status “Suspended, Active” is a suspended status. A license in this status is not an active license to practice medicine in Texas. However, a licensee with this status has maintained their registration requirements while the license is suspended, and should that suspension be lifted, the license can return to an active status without additional registration requirements.

Per Title 28, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Section 50.12, FBI fingerprinting reports are only allowed to be used for the purposes requested. Therefore, we are not able to access fingerprint results that were submitted to another agency. If you have been previously fingerprinted for another license or by another agency, we apologize for the inconvenience; however you will still be required to submit the fingerprint criminal history background to the TMB.

Renewal notices are sent out to the mailing address of record 60-90 days prior to the expiration date of a permit.  Currently, extensions are not granted on the basis of not receiving a renewal reminder in the mail.

Registration/renewal through TMB is completed on a different schedule than DSHS, with all permits expiring during specific set times of year (as opposed to expiring in the permit holder’s birth month).  MRT and LMRT licensees will expire twice a year, February 28th or August 31st.

As part of the transition from DSHS to TMB, existing MRT and LMRT licenses will have their first registration with TMB per the existing permit expiration date. The renewal fee charged at the time of the first renewal with TMB will be pro-rated to bring the permits in line with the new expiration dates.

There are no extensions for temporary permits at this time. However, upon completion of the application process, the TMB issues General and Limited MRT permits each week.

There is no grace period for the expiration date of a Medical Radiologist Technologist permit (general or limited). Once the expiration date has occurred, a penalty fee equal to one half of the registration fee will be added. After 90 days, the penalty fee will increase to equal a full registration fee. If a license has been expired for one year or longer it is automatically cancelled.
